Deanne is a self taught artist. She made her first ribbon skirt for her late sister DInnika Sutherland’s 1st memorial round dance. She didn’t have a ribbon skirt to wear and decided that she could create one for herself. She posted a photo of it online and it generated so much interest in her creation that she started taking orders, doing fashion shows and attending markets to promote and sell her work.
She creates a wide variety of Indigenous clothing, both traditional and contemporary. She makes ribbon outfits (Ribbon jacket and matching ribbon skirt) for infants, children, teens, and women. She also makes ribbon hoodies, ribbon vests, and ribbon shirts for infants, children, teens, women and men. She gets inspiration mainly from the individual themselves by finding out what is meaningful to them.
She is a mother to four amazing children and has an incredibly supportive fiancé. She is originally from Grouard, Alberta but currently resides in Edmonton, Alberta where she works full time from her home. She keeps herself busy being both a mother and entrepreneur. She believes that there are many challenges to doing both, but with a great mindset anything is achievable!
