Roots: Nakota Sioux
Now calls home: Edmonton
I am Edna Buffalo designer Creator of Mrs Flying Buffalo Designs. I am from Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation and my husband is from Whitecap Dakota Nation in Saskatchewan. He has taken his ancestors name as our business name. I create art from Applique and I love the process, and I do other things as well such as ribbonskirt/shirts.
My love is Applique & Artistry in that.
In March of 2017 I participated in a class learning to make ribbon
skirts, and at the same time I learned about Applique. I instantly fell
in love and I identified Applique as a form of artistry.
Learning the story behind ribbon skirts as well as
appliques part in it.
The story I learned about the ribbon skirt is the connection to
Motherearth and the sacred relationship with the land and
ourselves as Wiyamis (women). Just as the tipi keeps us secure to
the land, our ribbon skirts are like that of the tipi, Facing upward to
the Creator. Applique’s part in the story is the creation of our own
journey’s put into the story of the ribbon skirt. The creation of
Applique is sacred to me because I can express the story of the
individual in the way I understand it, and that makes it an intimate
experience for me as a artist.
