Frances Whitford is a Metis artisan whose pieces are made of moose hide, various types of furs and beadwork. Originally from Anzac, Alberta, she was raised largely by her grandparents Eva Mckenzie and Lawrence Whitford surrounded in the Metis culture. She was taught by her grandmother, a Metis artisan, who would not only make clothing for her family but also to sell in an effort to supplement their family’s income. Her grandfather was a trapper who would supply the furs and hides for her to be able to make items such as moccasins, jackets, mukluks etc.
Her brother has now stepped into their grandfather’s shoes and is the trapper and supplier of Francis’s fur and hide. The work she does is truly a creation of love and legacy to her grandparents and her Metis culture.
