About the Artist:

Linda Wright of Linda M. Wright

Roots: Inuvik, Northwest Territories – Nihtat Gwich’in

Now calls home: Edmonton

Linda Wright is of Gwich’in decent, originally from Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Throughout her life, Wright has worked in and travelled to many communities in the Western Arctic and Sahtu regions, creating a true appreciation for the unique landscapes and cultures of the north. Her career goals have always included art and design. She studied and worked in the fields of Graphic Design and Arts and Cultural Management. Linda’s artistic intention is to be current, engaging and proficient when creating.

Wright’s artwork, Clothed in Culture was selected for the 31st annual Great Northern Arts Festival cover art. Over the past several years, Linda has presented her work in Edmonton, at various exhibitions including, the Art Gallery of Alberta and the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Extension, The Extension Gallery.

Commissioned by Peace Hills Trust as a presenting artist at their annual Indigenous art shows, Wright created paintings, Vadzaih (Caribou) crossing and The Way Home as their door prizes.

The legends and stories illustrate a time when animals and humans spoke the same language, filled with humor and imparting morals. Wright is fascinated by these long-ago stories, which were told by the Gwich’in Elders so that they could be passed onto future generations. She is inspired to create a visual expression of these stories through new paintings that depict northern landscapes, people and animals. Through her art, Wright intends to develop a sense of appreciation for the north and provide an insight into Gwich’in oral storytelling traditions.

Linda is a contemporary realist painter living and working in Edmonton.
